Cooking made easy when camping… Spoiler: it’s in the can
With summer vacations is returning the time for camping both wild and on a site! Only daily brain-teaser: what do we eat? For tasty meals, you can always count on cans: here are the most practical ones to have in your tent and a few recipes to enjoy outdoors!
The top cans to bring camping
· Vegetables: picked when ripe and quickly canned, green beans, peas, mushrooms, celery hearts, beetroots, mungo beans, edamame and other corn kernels are practical and full of flavours. To unearth at Bonduelle: steam cooked vegetable cans as well as grated vegetables (carrots, celery) crunchy, canned, plain and drained.
· Legumes (or dry vegetables): already soaked and cooked, they are ready to be prepared cold (salads, hummus...) or hot (stews, soups...). Chick peas, lentils, red beans, white beans and flageolets are – among other things – rich in proteins.
· Cooked vegetables: couscous or pot-au-feu-style vegetables are ideal for an express hot meal with instant couscous to rehydrate with boiling water or even a bit of pasta. As for tomato cans, they turn into flavourful sauces in a simple pan with some oil and garlic.
· Fish cans: finally, tuna, sardines, mackerel and salmon fit perfectly in any salad or sandwich.
3 impressive can-based
1. Hummus: traditionally chick pea-based, this delicious Middle Eastern mash can also be prepared with white or red beans if not even canned beetroots! You only need to drain the legumes or beetroots, put them through a garlic press then sprinkle a bit of grated garlic on top, add some tahini (mashed sesame kept at room temperature), lemon juice, olive oil and a few spices. To enjoy with bread, crackers, grissini or raw vegetables.
2. Mixed salads: legumes still get an A in well-balanced salads like the Mexican one which unites red beans and corn completed with some fresh veggies (avocado, tomato, pepper, red onion...), coriander and a lime juice sauce. Other mix working nicely: canned beetroot cubes, some corn and some tuna, and a tasty vinaigrette.
3. Garnished flatbreads: Mexican tortillas and pita breads are easy to store, perfectly stacking up without taking too much space and replacing plates for a meal to enjoy with your friends. Do not hesitate to spread some hummus, add some cooked legumes, fresh vegetables, cheese..., even slices of grilled meat if you have a barbecue nearby!
