Choose small vegetables
For instance, radishes which also grow quite fast, so kids won’t have to wait long. Don’t forget that time is harder to grasp for them. When summer comes, all hail tomatoes! Small, easy to pick, soft and flavourful: they are also a children favourite. How proud would they be to pick and taste their harvest!
Sprout lentils
Lentils sprout quickly and demonstrate the magic of nature even to the little ones. The night before, soak the green or white lentils in water, then drain them. You then just need to place some cotton in small containers (glass yogurt pots, ramekins...), put the lentils in, water them a bit to damp the cotton and place everything in a place full of light. Observe them every day: it grows fast! Be careful: the cotton should always be humid.
Re-grow vegetables
No garden or balcony? It is very easy to give life back to already harvested vegetables – even those that were partly eaten: you just need a sunlit window. For instance, garlic cloves starting to sprout can be placed in a bowl filled with water, sprouts looking up. When the stems grow, cut them and use them like chives. It also works with the heart of a celery placed in a bit of water, the flat part at the bottom – or even the heart of a salad.
Create a potato family
Finally, a fun activity: put some grass seeds at the bottom of skin-coloured tights. Cover with sawdust or thin wood shavings and pack them. Tie a tight nod and cut what remains of the tights. Turn the "potato" and ask the kids to decorate it with eye stickers or other stickers, buttons, mouths cut in felt, etc. You just need to fill up a mug with water and put the funny potato in their – nod towards the bottom: placed in the sun, it will soon grow hair!
